How does AfterBite work?
One person scans the receipt using the iPhone app. AfterBite's AI reads every item, price, tax, and tip. Then everyone in the group either uses the app or joins via a web link to claim the items they ordered. Tax and tip are split proportionally based on what each person ate.
Do my friends need the app?
No. Only the person scanning the receipt needs the iPhone app. Everyone else can join from any device by opening the shared link or scanning the QR code in their browser. No download or account required.
Is AfterBite free?
Yes. AfterBite is free to use for both the person scanning and all guests joining the session.
How is tax and tip split?
Tax and tip are divided proportionally based on each person's subtotal. If you ordered 30% of the food, you pay 30% of the tax and tip. This is the fairest method and is calculated automatically.
What if we shared an item?
Multiple people can claim the same item. If two people both claim a pizza, the cost is automatically split between them. For multi-quantity items (like "3 tacos"), each claim represents one unit.
What if the receipt scan has errors?
After scanning, the app shows you the extracted items for review. You can edit item names, prices, quantities, tax, and tip before sharing the session with your group.
How long does a session last?
Sessions remain active until the creator closes them. We recommend finishing your split during the meal while everyone is together.
Is my data safe?
We take privacy seriously. Receipt images are processed and not stored. Session data is temporary and associated with random identifiers, not personal accounts. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Does AfterBite work on Android?
The receipt scanning app is currently available for iPhone only. However, Android users can fully participate in bill-splitting sessions via the web app at afterbite.app/join.
